Tablet woven belt for Norwegian national costumeOn Wednesday the 7th of October 2026, Dorothee Olthof will give a workshop on tablet weaving with simple historical patterns. This workshop can be followed without previous experience.
Tablet weaving is a technique for weaving sturdy, narrow and colourful bands. The oldest finds date from the Bronze Age (as far as we know today). In the centuries that followed, from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, the most beautiful patterns emerged, one more complicated than the other. Fortunately, there are also historical patterns for less experienced weavers.
During this workshop you will be introduced to the technique of tablet weaving and weave simple historical patterns, from the Iron Age to the 17th century. Participants learn to set up a tablet fabric, read patterns and the basics of tablet weaving. They also receive tips for weaving and finishing the belts as neatly and evenly as possible. If participants have their own tablet weaving cards, please let us know how many you will bring. We will consider this in our preparations.
This Wednesday morning workshop is given by Dorothee Olthof, an expert in the field of archaeological textiles and in the reconstruction of medieval and later clothing.
